Insider Ideas
Our stylist, Lauren, fell in love with the ‘crockery’ tea towels. ‘I really like how the design works across the space,’ she says. ‘I will be hanging up the pink and white pair – folded lengthways and butted up exactly against each other - as artwork on my own kitchen wall. I have an old ornate frame I picked up from a junk shop that I have painted white - they will fit perfectly inside.’

Fed up with the ubiquitous spots, stripes and flowers of so much of the mass-produced kitchen textiles flooding our high streets, graphic designers David Lum and Siân Preston Lum decided to create a fresh and exciting alternative under their own brand name Lumme. ‘We love designing everyday items in unusual ways,’ says David. ‘And when people look at them, we want to live up to the actual definition of the ‘Lumme’ name – to create ‘an expression of surprise and interest’.' According to Siân, inspiration for their designs has come easily. ‘We both love cooking and I’m also experimenting with growing vegetables, so we found the shapes and forms around us a rich source of ideas,’ she says. Working from a studio at their home in Buckinghamshire, David and Siân have been committed from day one to having their collection designed, screen printed and made in England. What's special about the Lumme collection is that each piece has been individually designed, often with detail embroidery. With their fresh, vibrant colours and simple keyline drawings, the Lumme range literally made us stop in our tracks when we came across their launch collection at the end of 2008. So why not ditch the dots and ditsy florals and treat yourself – and your kitchen – to something from the Lumme collection.
