Insider Ideas
If you are looking for a special christening gift with a difference, we think Nicky’s bears are perfect. Because of the traditional way in which they are made, they are not suitable for young children to play with. But unlike the ubiquitous silver teething ring or spoon (which rarely get played with either), Nicky’s bears are sure to become a well-loved part of the family for generations.

The Vintage Magpie

handmade bunnies and bears in traditional and vintage fabrics
Working from a studio at her home in Devon, Nicky Fraser is a self-professed perfectionist - and it shows. ‘I can spend hours getting an expression just right on one of my bears,’ she says. ‘And I must work with materials I love or I can’t make anything at all – the creativity just doesn’t work.’ The materials Nicky uses are 100% pure mohair (the traditional bear mohair) as well as some vintage fabrics and vintage trimmings. She describes her designs as ‘whimsical and vintage with a well-loved and worn appeal.’ When we first caught sight of Nicky’s collection, we fell in love on the spot. And we defy you not to do the same! ‘I have always loved old bears and toys and the nostalgia they bring,’ she says. Nicky set up her business – The Vintage Magpie – in 2007 and has a growing number of devoted customers. ‘I love being able to be creative every day,’ she says. ‘And I love being able to create something that will be special to somebody, something they might treasure for the rest of their life.’ Nicky’s favourite piece? ‘My favourite bear has to be Alfie. He looks so sad and I just love pandas!’
